The State of the Map (SotM) conference is the annual, international conference of OpenStreetMap (OSM)—three days packed with speakers, keynotes, workshops, and social events. Talks range in topic from Machine Learning to Humanitarian OSM, Community Partnerships to Education & OSM, and the latest tech partnerships.
In my role at DigitalGlobe, I had the opportunity to design the logo and overall branding for the 2017 event. I helped to bring the vision of the Colorado mapping community to life through digital invitations, web design, event signage, environmental design, and various print collateral.
SoTM enables you to connect with other mappers, businesses, government agencies, and non profits. Through the annual conference, attendees share their vision for the project, learn how to work with OSM data, and hack on the latest mapping improvements. OSM is a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world. Boulder is a vibrant mountain town with a unique downtown and culture. We wanted the logo and overall branding to depict the both the sincere volunteered geographic information of the open data community and as well as the unique qualities of stunning Boulder Colorado.
Inspiration was drawn from the state flag of Colorado, who's circular red "C" filled with a golden disk is well known throughout the state. The symbol sits behind a silhouette of the the Flatirons, an iconic rock formation in Boulder. A map of downtown Pearl Street is in the red "C". These elements combined depict the Boulder Colorado mapping community.
The branding uses silhouettes of the foothills and of the skyline of Boulder, and the shades of the mountains are reminiscent of dusk in the mountains. The logo, colors, and overall branding were implemented throughout the events digital and print collateral.
